History
Learning about History captures children’s interest like no other subject. At Church Langton we recognise the importance of capitalising on this. As Theodore Roosevelt says:
“the more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future”- Theodore Roosevelt.
Our History topics are wide-ranging and varied. Through CUSP, our History scheme emphasises building on prior knowledge throughout the curriculum. In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), students learn about the past and present through various activities, which helps them connect new learning in Key Stage 1 (KS1). The curriculum is structured to enhance cumulative knowledge, focusing on chronology, cause and consequence, and making connections across different time periods.
To ensure knowledge retention, CUSP History incorporates strategies like retrieval practice and deliberate tasks, making learning memorable. This cumulative approach helps students link new information to what they already know, fostering a deeper understanding of significant historical events, people, and places.
The curriculum includes modules that revisit and expand on key concepts, allowing students to develop a coherent mental timeline and avoid fragmented knowledge. Vocabulary is taught sequentially from Year 1 to Year 6, supporting comprehension of historical content.
The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future.
