Geography
Geography is an integral part of our curriculum at Church Langton. We recognise the importance of developing and nurturing children’s knowledge, care and understanding of their local environment and the wider world. We hope our children leave Church Langton with a lasting passion for Geography like Michael Palin did:
“my geography teacher at school inspired me to a lifelong interest in geography and a curiosity about our world which has stayed with me through my life. Geography is a living, breathing subject, constantly adapting itself to change. It is dynamic and relevant. For me geography is a great adventure with a purpose.” — Michael Palin
Our approach, using the CUSP scheme, emphasises building on prior learning, starting from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) where students explore their environment and develop foundational knowledge about people, culture, and the natural world. This approach helps students connect new, abstract concepts in Year 1 to familiar contexts, enhancing cognitive processing. The curriculum promotes cumulative knowledge, focusing on geographical concepts like spaces, places, and processes, while ensuring that students develop a coherent understanding of geography over time. Vocabulary is taught sequentially from Year 1 to Year 6, integrating high-frequency words to aid comprehension of subject-specific terms. Overall, CUSP Geography aims to deepen students’ expertise and prevent fragmented knowledge through deliberate practice and meaningful connections.
